Detroit, We Don’t Need Disney, We Got Hamtramck Disneyland At Home
My buddy Austin was in town, and while he was looking for things to do he asked if I had been to Hamtramck Disneyland. My response was “what the hell is Hamtramck Disneyland, he showed me some pictures from Google it looked like it was a small fair, but that was absolutely not the case.
With the price of going to Disney being a topic of discussion in recent weeks, and of course travel and lodging and associated costs of taking the family to Disneyland or Disney World. Detroit, we don’t need Disney, we got Hamtramck Disneyland at home.

Saturday, when we showed up to 12087 Kinlger in Hamtramck, we were first very confused, because the GPS stopped us in the middle of a residential area. We parked anyway, and walked back to the address. We were greeted by a sign on the fence telling us to let ourselves in, but asking not to disturb any of the items that were there.
What Is Hamtramck Disneyland?
Hamtramck Disneyland is an art display that was created by, Dmytro Szylak, a Ukrainian immigrant who came to America in the 1950 to work for General Motors (GM). After he retired from GM in 1980, Szylak began constructing Hamtramck Disneyland, which he updated until his passing in 2015.
The exhibit features art and exhibits painted on the garages, and in the backyard, and while it wasn’t what I was expecting when we planned to go there, it was definitely something cool to see. After Szylak’s passing there was no plan for the attraction, so the community came together to maintain Hamtramck Disneyland.
As you would expect, support from the community is essential, if you would like to support you can do that here. If you want to learn more about Hamtramck Disneyland, there were two documentaries about it that you can watch on Vimeo and YouTube.
