Today is National Junk Food Day! Did you know that studies show that each American eats almost five pounds of potato chips annually? Wow! Now junk food isn't something I eat regularly, but I do love a good scoop of ice cream, the fizz of a pop, or a handful of some yummy, salty chips!
According to wideopeneats.com some of America's favorite junk foods are Milky Way bars, Starburst, chips, crackers, cheez-its, and the list goes on.
Well, we Michiganders have some pretty iconic junk foods that were started right here in our state! While there are many types of foods and brands that started here I have listed 5 popular ones below. Which are your favorites?
Coney Dogs
Michigan doesn't have a state food, but if it did I am going to have to go with coney dogs! Of course there is always the long-standing rivalry in Downtown Detroit of who has the best coney dogs. Is it Lafayette Coney Island or their rivals who are right next door American Coney Island? And for those of you like me who do not eat pork or beef there is also Chili, Mustard, Onions downtown with their vegan coney dogs as an option.
Hudsonville Ice Cream

Who doesn't love a good scoop of good old ice cream. Especially one made right here in Michigan. Hudsonville Ice Cream is pretty great! My favorite is Mackinaw Island Fudge. What's yours?
Faygo
Faygo was founded right here in Michigan in 1907. Wow! Over 100 years ago.
Better Made Snack Foods
Founded right here in Michigan in 1930. This brand is well-known for sure. I love a good salty chip. Yum.
Detroit-Style Pizza
We even have our very own style of pizza! It's rectangular in shape with a thick crust. And hey, did you know you can get a scoop of Hudsonville Ice Cream at Buddy's Pizza & you can grab a Detroit Style pizza there? Nice!
