Belle Isle will close for the first citywide memorial drive to honor victims who passed away from the coronavirus this year.
On Monday, August 31st Belle Isle will be closed to all public car, bike, and pedestrian traffic for the day to accommodate the Belle Isle Memorial Drive which will honor the 1,500 Detroiters we lost to COVID-19. The closure will last the entire day.
According to reports, here are the guidelines for Detroit Memorial Day:
What: 14 consecutive funeral processions are set to drive past nearly 900 photos of loved lost to COVID-19. The photos represent a majority of the 1,500 Detroiters lost to the virus between March and Aug. 18.
When: Aug. 31, beginning with the first procession at 8:45 a.m. The procession will last from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Belle Isle; the funeral cars will lead the processions north on Chene and east on Jefferson to Belle Isle and then around the island.
