Water Safety Education: A New Proposal for Michigan Schools
As mentioned in today’s Shannon’s Scoop, water safety education may now be a requirement for students tp graduate in Michigan schools.

This year has seen a concerning rise in drownings in Oakland County, Michigan. With 11 reported drownings so far, up from seven last year, the state is considering legislative action to address the issue. The proposed bill, currently being debated in the Michigan Senate, aims to introduce mandatory water safety courses in all public schools across the state.
The focus of this initiative is on teaching students safe water practices, rather than swimming skills. This is significant because many schools in Michigan lack access to swimming pools, making actual swimming lessons impractical. If the bill passes, these water safety courses could be implemented as early as the 2026 school year.
The rise in drownings is a sobering reminder of the importance of water safety. Even though many community centers and organizations offer swimming lessons, accidents can happen in an instant. Hopefully, with this new legislation, Michigan will take a significant step towards preventing such tragedies.
