Detroit police chief James Craig has tested positive for COVID-19, Mayor Mike Duggan announced during a news conference Friday (March 27th).

Duggan stated that Craig, 63, will be on quarantine as he recovers from the virus. Assistant Chief James White will take over the day-to-day operations of the department.

“Certainly we want him to get rest, and fight this new challenge,” White said, adding that he’s keeping an open line of communication with Craig during his time off.

According to Duggan, 39 officers have tested positive for COVID-19, and an additional 468 are on quarantine.
