Detroit Lions Facing Free Agency Decisions; Brad Holmes Weighs Options for $100M Roster Change
The Detroit Lions are entering a pivotal free agency period as the team prepares for a significant roster transformation. As part of a $100 million transformation plan, the Lions face the challenge of balancing veteran experience with youthful talent to boost the team’s performance and competitiveness.
Defensive End
One key decision facing Brad Holmes, the Lions executive vice president and general manager, involves veteran defensive end, Za’Darius Smith. On Sunday, March 9, ESPN reported that the Lions plan to release Smith. Holmes must decide who will take Smith’s place on defense.
Edge Rusher
The edge rusher position outside of Aidan Hutchinson is a significant focal point for the Lions at this point. According to the website Pride of Detroit, the only edge rushers currently on the Lions’ roster include practice squad members Isaac Ukwu and Nate Lynn. Several players from last year’s front are set to become free agents including Levi Onwuzurike, Derrick Barnes, Marcus Davenport, and Al-Quadin Muhammad.
Interior Offensive Line
Kevin Zeitler started 16 of 17 regular season games at right guard for the Detroit Lions last season. He will become a free agent unless Detroit decides to re-sign the 13-year veteran. If the Lions decide to move 2024 sixth-round draft pick Christian Mahogany into a starting role, the team will need to select a backup guard, noted CBS News Detroit. Mahogany started in two games last season, one of which was a loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional playoffs.
Wide Receiver
The Lions seem to always be on the hunt for a No. 3 receiver, and this year is no exception. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams give the Lions one of the best wide receiver combos in the NFL. Kalif Raymond’s spot on the roster is secure, but two open roster spots exist for the Lions to fill in these positions, according to the Detroit Free Press.
