Detroit Zoo Penguin Exhibit Closing Temporarily…
The Detroit Zoo’s penguin exhibit will temporarily close soon for necessary foundation repairs…
The construction contractor for the Polk Penguin Conservation Center put in faulty waterproofing, and about 9 gallons of groundwater are coming into the habitat every day and need to be pumped out!
Luckily, the exhibit will remain open for most of the summer…
It will close September 9 and is not expected to reopen until June 2020.
The 75 penguins in the Polk Penguin Conservation Center will be relocated to their old habitat, but it will not be open for visitors.
The 33,000-square-foot center was opened in April 2016 and cost $32 million to construct…
It contains a 326,000 gallon, 25-foot-deep aquatic area where penguins can be seen swimming and diving.
