John Mulaney Divorces His Wife After Rehab Return

Comedian John Mulaney and his artist wife of six years, Anna Marie Tendler, are divorcing following his stay two-month stay in rehab, Page Six reports.

The media outlet’s sources say that Mulaney asked for a divorce from Tendler three months ago when he just got out of rehab. A spokesman for Mulaney confirmed the divorce, adding, “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.”

35-year-old Tendler is an artist that is a master’s candidate in NYU’s Costume Studies program. Through her spokesperson, she said, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”

As we previously reported, Mulaney had checked himself into a Pennsylvania rehab facility for 60 days last December, following a relapse. The former Saturday Night Live writer has been vocal about his struggle with alcohol and drug abuse, including cocaine.

38-year-old Mulaney revealed in 2019 that his partying and prescription and illegal drug abuse started at a young age. He began drinking at age 13 in order to get attention, saying, “I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.” He first became sober at 23-years-old after years of blacking out, admitting to even drinking perfume during a 2005 bender.

Earlier this month, Mulaney announced his first set of tour dates after spending time in rehab. The comedian is doing a five-day residency at Manhattan’s City Winery from May 10 to May 14. Called “John Mulaney: From Scratch,” every show has already sold out — but fans can still add their names to a “wait list.” The venue requires guests have a “vaccine or negative COVID test” to attend.

Some fans noticed that around the time of Mulaney’s rehab announcement, his wife was silent on social media when it came to showing support. Her Instagram account now solely focuses on her art.

Per Page Six, Mulaney often fondly referenced Tendler in his stand-up shows. The couple reportedly met in the late 2000s during a group trip to Martha’s Vineyard. They married in July 2014 in Boiceville, New York, by friend and comedian Dan Levy and the wedding had a 1920s and woodland-deco theme. Mulaney shared a wedding photo on his Instagram to mark the occasion. His caption read, “On a beautiful and perfect day, I married a beautiful and perfect woman. I wish I could live it over and over again.”
