Gymnast Jordan Chiles’ Mom Gets Delay In Prison Sentencing
Jordan Chiles is about to have the support of her mama during the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
On Wednesday, a federal judge approved a 30-day delay in the start of Gina Chiles’ prison sentence for wire fraud, because Jordan will be competing in the Summer Games from July 23 to Aug. 8.
In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Gina’s attorneys asked the court to allow her to self-surrender on Aug. 26, to give Jordan “some additional time to have her mother’s emotional support and guidance during such a monumental time her young life.”
According to court documents obtained by CBS 42, Gina pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was sentenced to one year and one day in prison.
CBS 42 reported the mom of the 21-year-old gymnast, “stole from clients and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on personal expenses through her commercial properties management business, Inspire Vision Property Management LLC.”
Gina was originally supposed to report to federal prison on July 27, the day the U.S. Gymnastics team will be competing in the finals if they qualify.
“Every moment that I watch Jordan is the most amazing moment as a mom,” Gina told Hoda Kotb on a TODAY segment with the other Olympic moms. “And so I just am looking at it as not bittersweet, but just sweet, period, that she’s here.”
Jordan announced her spot on the 2021 U.S. Women’s Gymnastic team via Instagram with a heartfelt message, “I have no words but to just say THANK YOU! It’s has been an amazing journey and can’t wait to finish it off strong!”
Jordan credits friend and now Olympic teammate Simone Biles for her success.
“Having [Biles] by my side 24/7 and giving me encouraging words every day definitely helped and it was very motivational,” Chiles said on The Today Show after qualifying for Tokyo. “Very happy to have someone like her.”
