This Michigan City Has the No. 5 Highest Homicide Rate in America
Homicide rates are something you should look into if you’re planning a big move. I mean, no area is perfect, but you definitely want to avoid moving to a neighborhood with a high rate of crime. When it comes to crime, homicide, obviously, can be the scariest. Now, a new study has determined that Michigan has one city that has the No. 5 highest homicide rate in America.
Wallethub has released a new study that lists the cities with the biggest homicide rates in America. “The homicide rate in the U.S. experienced a rapid increase during the past few years, so much so that President Joe Biden made tackling the problem a priority,” the study states. “Alarmingly, homicide rates have risen by an average of roughly 10% in 45 of the most populated U.S. cities between Q1 2021 and Q1 2023, and are still rising.” To find out which cities have the biggest homicide rate problems, “WalletHub compared 45 of the largest U.S. cities based on per capita homicides in Q1 2023, as well as per capita homicides in Q1 2023 vs. Q1 2022 and Q1 2021.” They add that “data from this study is based in some cases on preliminary police department crime data, which is subject to reclassification upon further investigation.”
Before we get to our city, let’s look at the city with the No. 1 highest homicide rate in America. According to Wallethub, that’s Memphis, Tennessee. That’s definitely not what I expected. According to the study, Memphis has a total score of 94.10. No. 2 is New Orleans, Louisiana. Then, No. 3 is Richmond, Virginia; and No. 4 is Washington, D.C.
So, which Michigan city has one of America’s worst homicide rates? It’s Detroit, which falls at No. 5 on the tally with a total score of 56.15. At least that’s well before the No. 1 worst city, which was Memphis. Find the full tally of the cities with the worst homicide rates in America here.
