Adapted from Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel, the 1998 hit gave Angela Bassett one of the defining roles of her career. Her Stella character is an overworked single mom in need of a vacation and some romance, so best friend Whoopi Goldberg takes her to Jamaica, where she meets and falls in love with Winston Shakespeare (Diggs), a man 20 years her junior.

Mel Gibson got more than he bargained for when he started reading the mind of Helen Hunt and other females in the hilarious comedy. So did Paramount, when the 2000 film took in $182 million domestically and $191 million abroad.

In the 2005 movie, Will Smith plays a romance expert hired to teach men like Kevin James ways to romance women way out of their league, until Smith’s character meets his match in Eva Mendes’ no-nonsense gossip columnist.

“She’s Gotta Have It”
In Spike Lee’s 1986 feature film debut, the film, which Lee updated as a Netflix series, tells the story of Nola Darling and her three unique boyfriends. It’s been heralded as helping to usher in the indie film movement of the ’80s and changing the representation of black people in American cinema.
“The Notebook”

The 2004 romantic drama based on the 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks, stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s. Their story is read from a notebook in the present day by an elderly man telling the tale to a fellow nursing home resident. The film grossed $13,464,745 in 2,303 theaters its opening weekend.
