Southland Center in Taylor is For Sale
As mentioned in today’s Shannon’s Scoop, Southland Center in Taylor has hit the sale block.
Southland Mall, now known as Southland Center in Taylor, has hit the sale block. This mall holds a lot of memories for many of us. I was dropped off there as a teenager, and it’s the same place I used to drop my daughter off. It’s a generational spot, as many downriver folks will agree.
However, the mall has seen a significant decline in value. According to a recent report, its value dropped from $114.4 million at the time of purchase to just $64 million. That’s nearly half its original value. The mall, which has over 800,000 square feet of retail space and houses more than 70 retailers, is struggling to maintain its appeal and economic viability.
What’s Next for the Southland Center in Taylor
The decline in big-box stores and the rise of online shopping have left many malls, including Southland Center, in dire straits. One potential solution is to convert these spaces into mixed-use areas. Instead of relying solely on large retail stores, integrating local shops, offices, and even residential spaces could breathe new life into these properties. I believe this shift could cater to younger generations who, burdened by student loan debt, are more likely to rent than buy homes.
