Detroit’s Autonomous Shuttle Service: A New Era in Mobility
As mentioned in today’s Shannon’s Scoop, Detroit’s autonomous shuttle service is about to kick off!
The city of Detroit is about to embark on an exciting new chapter in mobility solutions with the launch of its autonomous shuttle service. This initiative is designed to provide free transportation for individuals, especially those who are wheelchair-bound or have mobility challenges. The service kicks off tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 13th at 7 a.m., marking a significant step towards accessible and innovative public transportation.
The pilot program features four fully electric, wheelchair-accessible Ford transit shuttles. While initially, these shuttles will be manually operated to allow for route adjustments and other logistical considerations, the autonomous features are expected to be rolled out later this year. Despite this technological advancement, a safety officer will always be present behind the wheel to ensure the utmost safety for all passengers.
The shuttles will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, covering an 11-mile route that spans from Corktown through downtown Detroit to the East Jefferson Riverfront and back. With shuttles arriving every 10 to 15 minutes, passengers can track their progress via an app, offering convenience and reliability to the service.
