Meet The 12-Year Old Detroit Author Encouraging Kids to Read
March is National Reading Month and The Morning Bounce had the opportunity to speak with Karter Johnson, the 12-year old from Detroit who hopes his passion for reading will inspire other kids. Karter started Popcorn And Books and Build A Kid’s Library, a non-profit that encourages kids to read and also helps them acquire books.
Listen to Karter’s interview with Mean Jean & Shannon Renee below.
When asked what first drove him to start this venture, Karter told Mean Jean & Shannon Renee, “I read a newsletter article that stated that if third graders couldn’t read at grade level, they would have to repeat that grade. And that was part of the literacy problem. I did some research and I learned that another part of the literacy problem was the lack of books in the home and that families living in poverty can’t afford books.”
Providing Kids With Something to Read
Other children in the area have benefitted from Karter’s love of books. He says, “I launched the Build A Kids Library, where I send books to kids, ages 5 to 11 in Detroit and surrounding areas for free.”
Karter started reading himself when he was just 2-years old and he reads books to kids on his YouTube channel and on social media. But he’s not only a reader, Karter is a writer too. He co-authored a book titled “The Science Behind It”. He explained that it “basically it just talks about how 11 young moguls, including me, overcame obstacles and how they got to where they are now.”
This is a young man with ambition who has his priorities in order, to say the least. If reading is important to you too, you can register your child to receive books as well as donate books to help Karter help other kids in the community.
