Earlier this week, it was reported by many news outlets that Billy Dee Williams, best-known for his role as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, had come out as gender-fluid. Now, Williams is clarifying the statements that led media outlets to this conclusion.
The stories began to circulate after he made this statement in a recently-published interview with Esquire:
“You see, I say ‘himself’ and ‘herself,’ because I also see myself as feminine as well as masculine,” he continued. “I’m a very soft person. I’m not afraid to show that side of myself.”
When people read this, people assumed that Williams was coming out as gender-fluid, when in actuality he doesn’t even know what the term gender-fluid means. Yesterday, he clarified, stating:
“Well, first of all, I asked last night. I said, ‘What the hell is gender fluid?’ That’s a whole new term. But what I was talking about was about men getting in touch with their softer side of themselves.”
