Alabama City Councilman Hurls N-Word During Meeting
An Alabama City councilman is under fire for hurling a racial slur during a city council meeting.
City Councilman John “Tommy” Bryant, said the “N-word” during a Tarrant City Council meeting Monday night–a meeting that is open to the public. When Bryant said the racial slur in front of a full room of his shocked and disdained colleagues and residents, the councilman showed little remorse.
What led up to the incident was that Mayor Wayman Newton, who is Black, brought up some of Bryant’s wife’s controversial social media posts. In the video, shared to the city’s Facebook page, you’ll hear residents chime in and then Bryant stands up and drops the racial slur.
Bryant claims that he heard Mayor Newton use similar language during a past executive session, “It is ok for me to repeat it because, as I said before, I wanted everybody to know what the mayor had said. He said it in a derogatory manner; I said it so that people would know what the mayor said,” Bryant told CBS42 reporters on Tuesday.
Benard Simelton, President of the NAACP Alabama State Conference, discussed the incident to CBS42, “We are calling on Governor Ivey to denounce what he has said publicly, Not send him a little nice note, but to publicly denounce what this racist has said, and we are asking Governor Ivey to do that immediately so that this will not become who Alabama is, because the nation and the world is looking at what this racist has said, and right now this is the face of Alabama.”
Several of Bryant’s colleagues are campaigning for a resignation from the councilman but he is not budging and even insists on running for mayor per TMZ.
