Michigan Police Officer Reunited with His Service Dog
Police officers are nothing short of heroes. So, it’s heartwarming, to say the least, to see a Michigan police officer reunited with his service dog.
Service animals, as defined by ADA.com, are “animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties.”
Now, former Mason Police Officer Hayden Wildfong has officially been reunited with his former K9 partner Tamarack. This took place Wednesday (Feb. 7) in Mason at the Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter. K9 Tamarack went back to the Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter. When they weren’t able to care for her anymore, and K9 Tamarack’s former handler adopted her. How sweet is that?
Wildfong and Tamarack were separated in January when Wildfong resigned from the Mason Police Department. When he left, he was required to give Tamarack back to the city. That’s because of a memorandum he signed when becoming a K9 handler. He resigned, and a joint statement by the City of Mason and the Mason Public School District said Wildfong left his service weapon and gun belt unattended in the Mason High School gym while he was working out. So, following that event, K9 Tamarack went back to the Ingham County Animal Control, in accordance with her original adoption agreement.
Because Tamarack came from the animal shelter, she didn’t fell under the designation of city property. So, the shelter couldn’t care for her. They put her up for adoption and Wildfong was the first to apply for Tamarack. Right away, the shelter approved his application. Such a heartwarming story.
