Who Will Turn the Detroit Pistons Around?
Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores is on the hunt to find the person who will turn the Detroit Pistons around. I watched a lot of Pistons games this season. While there were some highlights, like seeing Malachi Flynn stun with a 50-Point spree off the bench, there were more lowlights. The team wrapped up the season with the worst record in the NBA and the worst record in franchise history. That said, I believe in this team.
What Kind of Leader Could Turn the Detroit Pistons Around?
The Detroit Pistons have officially announced that they will hire a new president of basketball operations to work directly under Gores. The team sent out a press release stating that Weaver and the team’s basketball staff will keep their positions, but “the organization assesses where adjustments are needed.”
“This past season has been incredibly difficult and frustrating for our fans, players and our entire organization,” Gores said, via the team’s announcement. “We will continue to invest in our core group of young players and surround them with the right complimentary talent.” He added that, “I am committed to doing whatever it takes to build a winning team. Nothing is off the table. As tough as this season has been, a bright future is available to us. It’s in our power to get this right, and we will. This will be a pivotal summer for the Pistons.”
So, who will come in and save the Detroit Pistons? Possible candidates for the team president position include Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst, according to Marc Stein, who was previously part of the Pistons’ franchise. A few other names that have popped up include Horst’s predecessor, John Hammond (also a former Pistons employee), former Portland Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey and former Pistons head coach Dwane Casey (who works in the front office right now), according to The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III.
Here’s what I think about who will turn the Detroit Pistons around. It’s a great idea to bring in a new president of basketball operations to shake things up. But, I really think we need to get someone who hasn’t been involved with the Pistons before. We need totally fresh blood. I’m not interested in seeing anyone within the organization promoted to this role, and frankly, the idea of bringing someone back who used to be with the Pistons isn’t exciting to me, either. We need someone totally new who has experience with a franchise that’s been winning lately. We need someone who’s familiar with the current state of the NBA and how to win in 2024 and forward. That’s how we can turn the Detroit Pistons around. Oh, and keep Monty Williams, please. Build a team around Cade Cunningham, too. Reach out to me with your comments.
