CDC Says Coronavirus Won’t Spread Through FedEx Packages From China
FedEx is taking preventative measures to remove any possible contamination of coronavirus from packages shipping from China.
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), “there is likely very very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures.”
Coronavirus is a family of viruses that causes fever, coughing, shortness of breath and worst of all – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). It can be spread via airbone droplets of fluid and physical contact with an infected person or animal.
So far, the coronavirus has claimed more than 425 lives and has infected tens of thousands worldwide. In the U.S., at least 11 cases have been confirmed.
Unfortunately, no vaccine has been made for the coronavirus. The CDC recommends:
- Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with dirty hands
- Avoid close contact with sick people
It is estimated that packages shipping from China to the U.S. can take about three days to arrive. Scientists believe coronavirus cannot survive on the surface of a package long enough to you get sick.
Still, FedEx says in areas where there have been outbreaks, they are supplying “surgical masks, hand sanitizers and alcohol wipes” to employees. They are also making sure to disinfect all facilities where there have been outbreaks.
In other words, your package arriving at your house won’t get you sick.
